Steeple Repair Project Completed!

The Katsbaan Reformed Church is pleased to announce
that the repair of the steeple has been completed.

On March 8, 2005, a severe windstorm damaged
the top of the our steeple. The high winds
completely bent over the ornamental wooden crown.

(March 9, 2005)

Fortunately, the top held on long enough
for Murphy/Wynne Builders
to remove it and make the steeple weather-tight.

(March 23, 2005)

Trumbull Restoration Company of Plainville, Connecticut,
completed the project on May 10, 2007.

The funds needed were raised
through personal donations
as well as generous grants from
The New York Landmarks Conservancy
and the R. C. A. Classis of Mid Hudson.

The overwhelming support for this project
was answered prayer indeed!

God Bless You All!  Enjoy the Steeple!

Outstanding job! We are so proud of you!
God's blessings to you!

On June 19th 2005 one of our very own, Alex Dombrowski was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Alex is a member of troop #44 of Catskill, New York led by Scoutmaster Paul Urban. The award is a performance-based achievement whose standards have been well-maintained over the years. Not every boy who joins a Boy Scout troop earns the Eagle Scout rank; only about 4 percent of all Boy Scouts do so. The list of Alex's achievements through the years is impressive to say the least. One of them was to organize and execute the replacement of a roof on one of the Church's outbuildings. He secured all the materials needed, put together a work force of both young and old, male and female. Alex organized the entire job from start to finish in a orderly and professional manner. Our Church family is not only thankful to Alex for the work he has done, but we could not be prouder of his accomplishment. Well Done Alex!

MAY, 2005

We have a new wooden cross in our sanctuary. It could be just a graceful addition to our church, but it is really much more than that. It is a symbol of what we can achieve when we work toward a common goal.

Last year when Reverend Alley began his ministry with us, the need for a cross to be hung behind the pulpit became apparent. Patty Dombrowski and the Sunday School bandied the idea about and, with some internet research, found what appeared to be perfect-but about one and a half feet too small. More talk ensued.

In the meantime, overheard on a Family Sunday in the hall was Joan Kaiser talking about a cross for the church sanctuary. Sunday School teachers spoke to Joan and the plan went on. Judy Fiero expressed an interest in the same project, and shared a story about a wooden mural in the West Camp church. The idea grew! Gene Trevail approached me with his idea to make a cross for the sanctuary with black walnut that he had, that had been provided by Charlie Kaiser. I gave him a picture of what the Sunday School had been looking at. Working magic with the materials, Gene produced the cross that was first seen by the congregation on May 22nd.

Many thanks to everyone who had a hand in this.

Sincerely,
Patti Breitung

WINDSTORM DAMAGES STEEPLE

On March 8, 2005, a severe wind storm damaged the top of the Katsbaan Church steeple. The high winds completely bent over the ornamental wood top.

Fortunately, the top held on long enough for Murphy/Wynne Builders to remove it and make the steeple weather-tight. Life-long resident Terry Wynne was part of the crew who erected the top over 20 years ago.

In the coming months the Katsbaan Reformed Church Consistory will be looking into replacing the top with something lighter and more weather-resistant. The Consistory is also exploring the possibility of installing modern lightning protection.

WE THANK GOD THAT NO MAJOR DAMAGE OR PERSONAL INJURIES OCCURRED WHILE THE TOP WAS HANGING AND DURING ITS REMOVAL.
